- "Still Black. Still Breathing. Still Woman. Still Magical"
You needed more than just a little rain to stop this show! Taken place last Sunday, September 9th was the Essence Street-Style Festival at the Duggal Greenhouse in Brooklyn, New York. The event was a huge celebration of all things black style, fashion and beauty during New York Fashion Week. Let me just say, the building reeked of BLACK GIRL MAGIC and I was absolutely floored to cover such an experience! As I walked through the venue gazing at the other women’s stylish looks, a few media outlets stopped me to gaze and photograph my wardrobe! I was rocking a full navy blue jumpsuit from No Dress Code, a street-wear brand from Chicago, a Neon green reflective vest, polka-dot happy socks, Mid-top Neon green Nike's and a statement piece I created called "The Nessa Cap" to top it off.
The Greenhouse was filled with thousands of attendees ready to enjoy live performances from their favorite artists, food trucks, networking and most importantly, SHOPPING!! There were over 50 vendors to shop with, leaving the guests with many selections to choose from. The live art installment feat. Moshoodat caught my eye upon arrival.
My first stop was to “The Strongest” installation, Lebron James’ latest sneaker launch which was recently released at the Harlem Fashion Week.
The sneakers are the first ever Lebron shoe designed by women, for women. SUPER DOPE RIGHT? The sneakers were designed by Fe Noel, Kimberly Goldson and Undra Celeste, who stood proud as they were excited to raffle off a signed pair of the sold out product.
The festival was surrounded with so many talented, beautiful and stylish women! I had never seen anything like it before. As the event carried on and the guests continued to shop with the featured vendors, outside was the host and actress, Amanda Seales. She introduced the first act of the day, the talented Yemi Alade, then off to the Street-Style fashion show and Julee Wilson honoring Fashion Influencer, Kellie Brown with the Street Style Maven award. YOU GO GIRL!
Later, a panel followed with Amanda Seales moderating a quick panel discussion with special guests, Trevor Jackson and Mack Wilds on the topic of love and dating. Of course you know every woman in the audience were all ears and eyes! LOL Luckily, I got the chance to catch up with the two actors backstage and they were as humble as can be.
Oh, Did I mention the G.O.A.T, Harlem’s Finest and Fashion Outlaw, Dapper Dan was in attendance. He and I bonded over the detail acknowledgements of our outfits worn and I even taught him how to use boomerang on Instagram haha.
Next, on the roster was my absolute FAV! It was time for Teyana Taylor to perform. The most anticipated moment of the evening was to see her slay the stage and she did just that! Teyana Taylor did not let the rain stop her from giving a A1 performance. She came in a full grey, sleek raincoat look, with boots to match and a neon cap to pop colour. I think it's safe to say, my edges were officially SNATCHED! With their umbrellas in the air, the audience sang every song word by word. Teyana even brought out her daughter, Junie to the stage who was dressed in a yellow leather jacket, grey ruffled dress, color tights and sneakers. LIKE DAUGHTER, LIKE MOTHER! Teyana Taylor’s high energy was amazing and her performance left me ready for a full concert. *looks up concert tickets*
Closing out the event, Kelis was presented with the ESSENCE Street-Style Disruptor Award. This event was a breath-taking experience and I absolutely cannot wait until next year to see what’s next!
