Q: Who is Chelsey Carter vs. Alex Carter?
A: My full name is Chelsey Alexandrea Carter. I chose to name the brand Alex Carter because it is, after all, my name. However, while I was studying fashion in college, I was told by my professor that women do not always admire other women telling them what to do/what to wear. I chose to fly under the radar of somewhat of a “unisex” name, to avoid that problem. It is short. No one will miss pronounce or misspell.
Q: As a child, what was your dream job?
A: Originally, I wanted to become a lawyer. I was, still am an opinionated person who enjoys a good debate. Around the age of 12/13, my interest in art and fashion took hold.
Q: What was your most difficult obstacle starting your brand?
A: Deciding how to build it, from the ground up. What I want it to be known for. It’s legacy. Developing this core was difficult to begin but I am very pleased with it’s fruitfulness and respect from my audience/clientele.
Q: What does girl power mean to you?
A: Female empowerment means to feel support on tangible and abstract levels from your/any female community. To uplift women and feel uplifted in light, love and relatable journey’s stories. Then being able to use that energy to give back to younger women to do the same. It is generational positivity and unconditional love for your sista!
Q: How would you describe the evolution of your design style/aesthetic ?
A: It has truly grown into something I could have never imagined because I consider myself an emotional designer. My style is merely a reflection of just that, my mood. With each passing day, those moods change. The evolution of that aesthetic has been to reach my customer channeling those same emotions. They buy because they can relate to the silhouette, the color and the vibe it brings.
Q: I'll give you two options, pick one. GO! Sweetie Pies or McArthurs?
A: Sweetie Pies!!
Q: When you are not designing, how do you enjoy spending your free time?
A: Podcasts and watching T.V.
Q: What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
A: Being able to inspire young black girls who thought designing clothes was impossible. Reaping the benefits of my talents and being able to live off of that. Blessed beyond measure!
Q: What is your favorite Alex Carter collection to date? Why?
A: The Class Is In Session collection. It was an all outerwear collection. I had never done outerwear before. I had also never catered my brand to a male market. Pleased with how it turned out. Never say never. First time for everything.
Q: Where do you see yourself and your brand in 10 years?
A: Living a peaceful life, hopefully not having to witness anymore deaths!! I pray to remain in God’s favor. Continue to share my gift with the world and manifest that it continues to receive it!!
